"Class Three" is a general term that is given to items that must be registered under the National Firearms Act (NFA) which is administered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Explosives (ATF). You can not legally possess these items unless you register them on a Form-4, a special government form intended for this purpose. Items that must be registered include: machine guns, silencers, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, and certain other items such as pen guns. When you purchase a Class Three item, you and the seller complete sections of the Form-4, and have it signed by your local law enforcement officer (usually the Chief of Police). You then send it (and a transfer tax) to the to the NFA branch of the ATF for approval and re-registration. The dealer/seller holds on to your item until s/he receives the approved Form-4, then you take possession. A copy of your Form-4 should be with you any time you take the Class Three item away from your home. A History of CLASS THREE at PF&G For many years, machine gun shooting has been allowed on the Action Ranges at the Pelham Fish and Game Club, but there was never an official Class Three Discipline. or organized shooting events. In the spring of 2003, three club members gathered together and laid out the plans for the first "official" Class Three Committee. This Committee was approved by the Board of Directors. The Committee's goals were to define a set of rules and guidelines on how a machine gun shoot would be conducted at PF&G. The original Class Three Committee consisted of John Burger, Steve Nottonson, and Bob Shaunessy. These three drew up a set of procedures, and the first "official" Machine Gun Shoot was held at PF&G on October 19, 2003. This event was a success, and all safety rules were followed. Currently there is a Machine Gun Shoot held monthly, every month from April to November. Be sure to check our website and online calendar for the next shoot date. Also be sure to get your copy of the red PF&G "Range Rules" booklet, which covers this and all the ranges. Available online at Range Rules (click).
